Since the passage of the 21ct Century Cures Act in December, many have asked what it  means to the average citizen. This sweeping legislation promises to improve upon a range of issues from high-risk, high-reward medical research to improved coverage for mental illnesses.

Some of the highlights of this new law are:

  • Funding for the Precision Medicine Initiative.
  • Additional NIH funding for medical research.
  • Creation of a new assistant secretary for mental health and substance use.
  • Ensuring equal coverage for mental and physical illnesses.

WCG Foundation’s focus on getting experimental medicines to desperately ill patients through expanded access programs may soon be more easily facilitated. Through the 21st Century Cures Act, changes are underway that will help simplify the approval process for expanded access treatment uses. Among the provisions in the new law is a requirement that pharmaceutical companies post on their websites procedures and contact information for patient and physicians interested in trying an experimental medicine through expanded access.

In the coming months and years, the changes mandated by this law will unfold. We will explore further the changes made by this legislation that affect the priorities of WCG Foundation.
