Using a discovery involving the boy’s own stem cells, physicians were able to save the life of a boy with a dangerous genetic skin condition. The patient, who was suffering from junctional epidermolysis bullosa, in which the skin sheds the epidermis, had lost over eighty percent of his top layer of skin. Through the growth of skin stem cells and the use of a genetic therapy, physicians were able to grow sheets of skin and graft them onto the boy, saving his life.
